What this test measures

The HFE gene test looks for the two common variants (C282Y and H63D) behind hereditary haemochromatosis, a condition where the body absorbs too much iron. About one person in eight of northern European ancestry carries one copy of C282Y.

Why doctors request it

Tested when ferritin and transferrin saturation are raised, and in relatives of someone with the condition.

What commonly pushes it up

Carrying one or two copies of either variant, inherited; only two copies of C282Y, or C282Y with H63D, commonly lead to iron loading
