What this test measures
BK virus is a common virus that most people carry harmlessly. After a kidney transplant, immune suppression can let it multiply and harm the new kidney, so the amount in blood is measured.

Kidney transplant clinics check it regularly in the first two years and whenever kidney function changes.

- Strong immune suppression allowing the virus to multiply

- Reducing immune suppression, under the transplant team's direction
