Methotrexate level
What this test measures
Methotrexate levels are measured after high-dose chemotherapy to make sure the medicine is clearing, so that the rescue treatment can be timed. Weekly low-dose methotrexate for arthritis or psoriasis is not monitored by levels.
Why doctors request it
Measured on hospital wards at set times after high-dose infusions.
What commonly pushes it up
- Kidney impairment slowing clearance
- Fluid collections in the abdomen or chest that store the medicine
- Some anti-inflammatory painkillers and antibiotics as a class
What commonly pushes it down
- Normal clearance over the days after the infusion
Everyday reasons for a value outside the range
- The time since the infusion defines the acceptable value, so there is no single range
