FVC
What this test measures
FVC is the total volume of air that can be blown out after the deepest possible breath in. It reflects lung size and the stiffness of the lungs and chest.
Why doctors request it
Part of spirometry, used with FEV1 to distinguish narrowed airways from stiff or small lungs.
What commonly pushes it up
- There is no problem with a high value
What commonly pushes it down
- Stiff lungs (fibrosis) and chest wall problems
- Weak breathing muscles
- Severe airway narrowing that traps air
- Poor effort or a short blow
Everyday reasons for a value outside the range
- The predicted value depends on age, sex, height and ancestry
- Stopping the blow early lowers it
