What this test measures
Cytology examines the cells from the cervical screening sample under the microscope. In the UK it is now only done when the HPV test is positive.
Why doctors request it
Part of cervical screening when HPV is found, to see whether the virus has caused any cell changes.
What commonly pushes it up
- Cell changes graded as borderline, low grade or high grade, most of which are treatable and many of which resolve on their own in the general population
What commonly pushes it down
- A negative result is the usual finding
Everyday reasons for a value outside the range
- Results can be equivocal and are then repeated
- Recent vaccination or infection elsewhere can occasionally give a weak positive
