A urine pregnancy test detects the hormone hCG, made by the placenta from about a week after implantation.

- Pregnancy, including in the weeks after a miscarriage or termination
- Very rarely, some tumours

- A negative result is the usual finding outside pregnancy

- Very early pregnancy can read negative; a repeat after a few days is standard
- Dilute urine can read negative
