IA-2 antibodies
What this test measures
IA-2 antibodies target a protein on the insulin-producing cells. Like GAD antibodies they mark an immune process against the pancreas.
Why doctors request it
They are requested alongside GAD antibodies when the type of diabetes is uncertain, particularly in children and young adults.
What commonly pushes it up
- Autoimmune diabetes, most often around the time it starts
What commonly pushes it down
- They tend to fade over years after diabetes begins
Everyday reasons for a value outside the range
- Thresholds differ between labs
- A negative result does not exclude autoimmune diabetes, which is why several antibodies are tested together
