What this test measures

The herpes simplex test detects HSV-1 or HSV-2 genetic material from a swab of a blister or ulcer, or antibodies in blood.

Why doctors request it

Requested for genital or oral ulcers, and sometimes in pregnancy.

What commonly pushes it up

Current or, for antibody tests, past herpes infection, which is very common in the general population

What commonly pushes it down

A negative result is the usual finding

Everyday reasons for a value outside the range

Results can be equivocal and are then repeated
Recent vaccination or infection elsewhere can occasionally give a weak positive
