What this test measures
The HIV viral load counts copies of the virus's genetic material per millilitre of blood. On effective treatment it falls below the detection limit.
Why doctors request it
Used by HIV clinics to monitor treatment, usually every three to six months.
What commonly pushes it up
- Untreated infection
- Missed medicine or resistance
- A recent vaccination or infection can cause a small temporary blip
What commonly pushes it down
- Effective treatment
Everyday reasons for a value outside the range
- Below 50 copies/mL is the target on treatment, and Not detected is common
- Small blips below 200 are usually of no consequence
