Faecal elastase
What this test measures
Elastase is an enzyme made by the pancreas that passes through the gut unchanged. A low stool level shows the pancreas is not making enough digestive enzymes.
Why doctors request it
Used when weight loss, pale greasy stools or unexplained diarrhoea raise the question of poor pancreatic function.
What commonly pushes it up
- There is no meaningful high value
What commonly pushes it down
- Long-standing pancreas damage
- Cystic fibrosis
- After some pancreas surgery
- A very watery sample, which dilutes it
Everyday reasons for a value outside the range
- A watery sample reads falsely low
- Enzyme supplements do not affect it
