What this test measures
CMV IgM is the early antibody that appears in the weeks after a new cytomegalovirus infection. It fades over months.
Why doctors request it
Requested in pregnancy or in a glandular fever-like illness when a recent infection is being looked for.
What commonly pushes it up
- Recent CMV infection
- Occasionally a persistent or false positive, which is why it is read with IgG and avidity tests
What commonly pushes it down
- A negative result is the usual finding
Everyday reasons for a value outside the range
- Results can be equivocal and are then repeated
- Recent vaccination or infection elsewhere can occasionally give a weak positive
