Anti-smooth muscle antibodies
What this test measures
Anti-smooth muscle antibodies are found in autoimmune hepatitis, and at low levels in many other conditions and in healthy people. The result shows whether the antibody is present; it does not by itself establish any condition.
Why doctors request it
Requested by specialists when symptoms and other tests point towards one of the autoimmune conditions, or as part of an ENA or liver autoantibody panel.

- The autoimmune condition the antibody is associated with
- Low-level positives in other conditions and in the general population

- A negative result is the usual finding
