Anti-mitochondrial antibodies
What this test measures
Anti-mitochondrial antibodies are the hallmark of primary biliary cholangitis, a slowly progressive condition of the small bile ducts. The result shows whether the antibody is present; it does not by itself establish any condition.
Why doctors request it
Requested by specialists when symptoms and other tests point towards one of the autoimmune conditions, or as part of an ENA or liver autoantibody panel.
What commonly pushes it up
- The autoimmune condition the antibody is associated with
- Low-level positives in other conditions and in the general population
What commonly pushes it down
- A negative result is the usual finding
